Valentines Day is a special time of year when you let your loved ones know just how much you care about them. It is a great opportunity to treat them to something extra special and everyone loves a romantic gesture, no matter how small. So it’s time to think about valentines gifts that will show you have gone the extra mile and put some thought into a gift that will be truly appreciated. A thoughtful gift on Valentines Day does not necessarily mean spending a lot of money; it should just demonstrate that you have taken the time to get something personal.

There is nothing wrong with going the traditional route with your gifts for Valentines Day. Flowers, chocolates and a romantic meal are all appreciated. You may want to choose chocolates, flowers, perfumes and restaurants at the higher end of the market if your budget allows, after all it’s not every day these items are exchanged and the more special they are, the more special the recipient will feel!

You may want to think outside the box if you know your partner would prefer something less traditional. You could go the extra mile to research a gift that would be unique and very special to them, for example you could hunt down a first edition of their favourite novel or buy something that is tied up with any hobbies or special interests they might have.

Collectors and hobby enthusiasts should be relatively easy to buy for as there will usually be something they are lusting after or an item to add to their collection. They may need to update sports equipment or you could upgrade something for them. Showing that you have researched and gone to the trouble of sourcing something especially for them, perhaps a rare item for a collection will definitely be appreciated.

While both sexes may be fashion fiends, it is usually women who have a longing for designer goods. So if you are a man thinking about an extra special gift for your partner, in the run up valentines day gifts pay special attention to any clues about clothes, handbags or footwear your partner may be craving. If you are out shopping take note of items she may try on, or spend a lot of time looking at. If she is particularly helpful she may even tell you what item she would love or conveniently circle it in a magazine!

Think about a gift with longevity, classic items like bags or scarves that are considered investment pieces. These will be treasured for many years and used for a lifetime instead of items that are only likely to be a passing fad or last a season at best.

Perhaps you are considering purchasing the ultimate valentines gift, the engagement ring. You will need to be confident you can choose a ring that she will love, perhaps take one of her friends with you as they may have a better idea and don’t forget to look in her jewellery box to get an idea of her taste in jewellery. And if popping the question is not on your mind you can’t go wrong with some fine jewellery like a necklace or earrings, again items that will be used for a lifetime.

Whatever you choose for valentines gifts, putting a little extra effort in will be the difference between an impersonal and throw away gift and a gift with ‘wow factor’ that will surely earn brownie points for the rest of the year! The only problem is how to top it the next year!
